Helping Those in Need

During September, the Ansaar Project's Halal Food Bank in Sydney is partnering with Jewish House and Exodus foundation for the collection of non-perishable goods to assist homeless people in need that are unable to afford food or not in the position to feed themselves fully. The Yes We Can campaign will be running inside 21 Coles stores throughout Metro NSW.

This project is part of Al-Ghazzali Centre's commitment to inter-religious cooperation in goodness.

Free spiritual education for all? You can help!

Assalaam alaikum All,

Imagine you had a yearning to learn more about your Deen - you know there are classes happening in your neighbourhood that you would love to attend but didn't have the money to pay (Note: AGC would always admit students even if they couldn't pay).

This is the dilemma facing seekers of knowledge across the globe. To combat this, Al Ghazzali Centre and Seekers Guidance have implemented an initiative called Knowledge Without Barriers.

This is what Shaykh Faraz Rabbani has to say about Knowledge Without Barriers "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Be avid for all that benefits." The scholars have explained that this entails that the believer strives to promote the [1] greatest, [2] widest, and [3] most lasting benefit possible. "Knowledge Without Barriers" is an expression of our commitment to spread the light of Prophetic guidance as far & wide as we can--without barriers. Join us in promoting the way of excellence & mercy--the Prophetic way of knowledge, guidance, and inspiration."

What does this mean for you? Basically, if you pledge an amount to donate to 'Knowledge Without Barriers" you will be helping others to get an Islamic education for FREE (The classes will be free for everyone, not just those who can't afford it). Students from places such as Bosnia, and South Africa right to our shores here in Sydney will have free access to selected classes being held online and live.

Also, see http://www.SeekersGuidance.org/SeekersCircles for more information. "You who are desirous of acquiring sacred knowledge, expressing in yourself a sincere longing and passionate thirst for it, know that if you aim in seeking knowledge is to compete, show off, outdo your peers, garner attention, and amass the debris of this world, then you are on your way to rendering your religion null and void, destroying yourself, and selling your eternal life for this present one... But if, in seeking knowledge, your intention and aim, between Allah Most High and yourself, is to gain guidance, and not simply the transmission of information, then glad tidings be to you. The angels will spread their wings for you as you walk and the fish in the sea will ask forgiveness for you as you strive. You should know before all else that guidance, which is the fruit of knowledge, has a beginning and an end, an outward aspect and an inward essence. [And] there is no way to reach the end without mastering the beginning...,"

Why is it important to have a Food Bank in Australia?

Sadly, there are a number of Muslims with a shortage of food in Australia. Many of these Muslims regularly seek assistance in searching for food from various groups and organisations in the community. These individuals and families are from many different countries, the majority being former refugees. They have trouble accessing enough government assistance, and feel isolated from others in the Muslim community.

We have encountered a few of these indivuals over the 8 years of running the Ansaar Project's "Feeding the Homeless" program. However, we have realised there are many more whom are reluctant to approach us and other organisations. Local organisations we have partnered with in our feeding the homeless programs and blanket drives, have reported regular visits by Muslims. These organisations have remarked that the Muslims have requested halal food for themselves and their families.

The Halal Food Bank will help to improve the wellbeing of these indiviuals and their families. You can help make this possible by participating in this food drive and donating to the bank.

Review - "The Camel’s Gratitude” by imam Afroz Ali

THEM CAMELS GOT IT ALL

It was an Arabic class I was in when imam Afroz let us in on the secret that much of Arabic is hidden in the camel. Lol ok he didn’t say it in those words but you get the point.
If you don’t then you will get it after you read “The Camel’s Gratitude” article by imam Afroz Ali.

The piece was written on gratitude (shukr and hamd) as one of the highest virtues, however half of it talks about some camel. There is of course a connection to it.

When I read the first third of the article I was amazed at the camel’s … amazing-ness if I may call it that. This got me thinking how little I know about so much and how little I know simply about milk. Cows milk in this case because I ain’t drinking no camel’s milk… because I don’t own one ofcourse. FYI I don’t own a cow either…ANYWHO moving on

The rest of the article talks about the difference between shukr and hamd… tying it in with the camel =)
I knew that thanking Allah couldn’t simply be a tongue service by saying 'alhamdulillah' and not showing it in our deeds. However the article shed more light on the depth of gratitude.
What I took out of it is someone who is grateful is totally, absolutely humbled by the Magnificence of his Creator and sees Him as the one who TRULY knows it all. Like, He just knows EVERYTHING better than you and I; therefore knows what He’s doing.
When one understands this nothing else matters. One is in complete submission, by dealing with what’s in front of him in ways most pleasing to his Creator.

“In hamd one recognises the gifter regardless of when, how and what was given!” – Now THIS is what you call love. May Allah bless us all with it!!

the unveiling hijab book - my review

The Unveiling Hijab is a book written by imam Afroz Ali in "hopes to alleviate the confusion for those who are seeking facts on the matter, as well as to offer proof against sophistic arguments on the subject."

My thoughts on it

- Thorough in explaining the significance and proof of the hijab from the Primary Sources for Islamic Jurisprudence, mainly Qur’an, the saying’s of prophet Muhammad peace be upon him, and the practices of female companions of his time

-Thorough in refuting everyone who said anything against it from self-professed-know-it-alls who literally got no clue as to what they’re talking about when it comes to anything to do with islam, to media and ‘academics’ - through using the above mentioned sources– imam Afroz for lawyer!

-Flows extremely well so one doesn’t feel lost while reading it no matter the level of knowledge of Islam one might or might not possess

For those who haven’t read the book, just something to share that might intrigue you =)
“…….Firstly, the likes of Adonis and Taheri wrote in support of the French ban of the hijāb, claiming that Hijāb had “nothing to do with Islamic religious injunctions”. But, the French Government banned the hijāb on religious grounds!
Secondly, because the academia holds much prestige and credibility, concocted ideas of the academics can very quickly obscure the truth of a matter, as has become the case regarding the hijāb……”

And if you’re still not intrigued
“…As one of the foremost Islamic Scholars- al-Ghazzali articulated, physical veiling “is a mandatory preservation of honour of the women….”

Zakaat Program Australia

Al-Ghazzali Centre has an established Humanitarian and Charitable program, through its Ansaar Project activities. The Ansaar Project’s “Feeding the Homeless” project provides assistance to anyone in Australia, particularly the homeless, regardless of gender, race or religion.

Al-Ghazzali Centre has extended this program of work to also provide continuing assistance to those in need in the Muslim Australian community who are eligible recipients of Zakaat.

The established Islamic Principle in distributing Zakaat requires the collected funds through Zakaat to be spent locally. For us, it is Australia. Zakaat funds over and above the amount needed to help Muslim Australians, can then be allocated internationally, which also has very specific conditions for a valid transfer of wealth from the Zakaat payer to the recipient.

Al-Ghazzali Centre is committed to upholding this Islamic principle without compromise.

The number of people to receive Zakaat in Australia is increasing and Al-Ghazzali is seeking to meet this need with your continued assistance.

How to make your Zakaat Payment
Transfer funds electronically or in person to the following account:

Bank: Westpac Banking Corporation
Account name: Al-Ghazzali Centre

Myth:
There are no poor Muslims in Sydney or other location around Australia.
Fact:
Al-Ghazzali Centre receives genuine requests for financial assistance from about 10 families or individuals within Australia per month for urgent assistance.

Myth:
Poor people are poor because they are lazy don't want to work.
Fact:
Up to 80% of Al-Ghazzal Centre's assistance through the Zakaat program is received by those who were in a financially stable relationship or work prior to seeking the urgent assistance.

Myth:
All poor families are on some type of government assistance and that is enough for them.
Fact:
There are many complicated reasons why a person would need assistance through Zakaat. Government assistance is often never enough, particularly for families who have existing health, financial or settlement problems. There are others who are victims of foul play by their own families.

Myth:
Most people who ask for money are charlatans.
Fact:
Whilst al-Ghazzali Centre’s Zakaat Program is only in its second year the vast experience and knowledge of those operating the program confirm that no more than 1-2 persons in over a decade has ever taken advantage of Zakaat assistance. The genuine assistance requests far outweighs any potential exploitation within Australia.

Myth:
There are no homeless Muslims in Australia.
Fact:
Al-Ghazzali Centre meets homeless Muslims and it is a rare occasion. But, they do exist, who end up on the streets for many unfortunate reasons. Within Sydney, Auburn has a comparatively high frequency of homeless Muslims.

Investing Right for Right Returns

By Afroz Ali

In any kind of investment, amongst the first things you will learn is that investment for profit requires a tried and tested step-by-step process. For example, property investment has a 6-step process for successful returns. And, in each of these portfolios for investment, accurate knowledge is number one priority on the list of steps.

Spiritual investment – investment for the Hereafter – is no different. There are tried and tested sequences for the journey to the Hereafter wherein one meets their Lord, and learning and practising upon the Sacred Knowledge is priority number one. This Knowledge is the basis for personal transformation in order to make the right investment for the right returns. This tried and tested method was exemplified as well as exhorted by the Beloved Messenger of Allah The All-Knowing, upon whom be peace and blessings of Allah, and its principle revealed by Allah the Exalted Himself. In The Qur’an Allah lets it be known:

Indeed, Allah will not change the condition of a people until they change what is in themselves.
[Qur’an 13:11]

And:
There are these limits of Allah, which He makes plain for the people who have knowledge.
[Qur’an 2:230]

[The Condition for Change]

The condition we ought to change to get things right can only occur through appropriate knowledge; otherwise one’s effort in investing will be futile and no return will eventuate. Similarly, Allah has placed limits which the servant of Allah must be aware of, otherwise one’s investment will only lead to ruin.

The Messenger of Allah, upon whom be peace and blessings of Allah, said, “Allah will not seize Sacred Knowledge by removing it from people, but will seize it by removing the People of Knowledge until there remains no person of Knowledge and people will appoint ignorant people as their leaders. When asked, they will give rulings without knowledge. Thus, they will be misguided themselves and will misguide others.” [Bukhari and Muslim]

In another Prophetic Tradition he said, “Soon will come a time upon people when nothing of Islam will remain but its name and nothing of the Qur’an will remain but its script (in both cases, in other words, there will be no knowledge remaining). These people’s Mosques will be in fine decoration and also full but it will be empty of true guidance. Their preachers will be the worst of people beneath the sky: from them corruption will emerge and into them it will return.” [Bayhaqi]

[Two Things Needed]

Two things arise from these Divine and Prophetic Guidance: firstly the access, preservation, learning and practice of the Sacred Knowledge is paramount and the first step towards right investment. And secondly, if social institutions are built where there is a lack of Sacred Knowledge, the investment in their glitter will amount to nothing.

No amount of investment into social institutions will ever be successful, unless there is at least the equal investment into institutions that provide access to learning the Sacred Knowledge.

It may be popular and exciting to look at investing and developing Islamic art galleries, museums, libraries, youth social activity centres, etc, but none will find ultimate success until and unless there is an educated sector of society that knows the Sacred Knowledge.

Social institutions are a result, not the impetus (nor a replacement for Sacred Knowledge institutions) to a society of safety, wellbeing and benefit.

If the equation for such development was reversed in Muslim communities around the world, you will find the social institutions to then be successful and sustainable, otherwise all the social institutions will do is turn into a commercial venture that thinks it educates, but really does nothing more than be a speck in the landscape of buildings.

To invest right, one must prioritise investing in Centres of Learning which nurture the seekers of such knowledge to act on such Knowledge. Only then will there be right returns to the investment, manifested in the goodness in this world, and realised in the closeness to one’s Lord in the Hereafter.

Fiqh & Science of Crescent Sighting Workshop - Melbourne

Last weekend was the Queens Birthday long weekend in Melbourne and alhumdulillah, I'm so grateful to have had the opportunity to attend 2 invaluable workshops presented by Imam Afroz that gave me so much more than any relaxing getaway could have.

The first of the workshops was the one on the fiqh and science of crescent sighting. My memories of the argumentation and division within the Melbourne Muslim community over the exact dates for the beginning of Ramadan and the two Eids span decades. “The (insert ethnic-based Muslim community) are starting today but the board of Imams say it's tomorrow based on calculation, whilst another group are following the Saudis!” So much commotion each year that it has actually become a point for spoken word artists like Zohab Khan to dedicate whole pieces to. Where did I stand on this whole issue? I knew so many of my respected teachers and the shuyukh I have been blessed to learn from, including Imam Afroz Ali and Shaykh Hamza Yusuf were passionate about establishing the lunar month based on crescent sighting. Whilst on the otherhand, I knew our own local board of Imams would issue dates based on information that would be completely different to that of the people thatfollowedcrescent sighting. With hadiths being quoted about 'following the jamaa'ah and not creating division within the community' I often found myself in a state of confusion, not knowing which path to take, whether to do things on a different date to my parents/friends or just follow the masses until I had conviction in what I was doing.

When I heard about the upcoming crescent sighting workshop in Melbourne, I was both excited and nervous at the same time. My nerves stemmed from the fear that the content of the workshop would be way too complicated for my mind to grasp and I could be overloaded with a whole lot of information that I didn't understand. These fears were dispelled within minutes of Imam presenting the workshop. SubhanAllah, I was amazed at how so much seemingly
complicated content could be condensed and presented in such a practical way, with clear descriptions, explanations, diagrams and even animations to ensure that all those who attended would walk out confident in their understanding of the topic. As always, Imam was open to questions and had no qualms repeating things in order for us to understand. We even had a 13 year old boy attend the workshop that day, engage in all aspects of the presentation and leave with so much more understanding and passion than he ever expected alhumdulillah. The scientific as well as fiqh facts were presented and explained in detail by someone who clearly had a sound knowledge base on the issue and it was amazing to see where all the misunderstandings have arisen from in our communities. Bottom line, you can't calculate dates
without sighting the crescent and it's scientifically impossible to calculate when the crescent will be sighted... want to know why? Ask Imam Afroz or attend a future workshop :) .

Alhumdulillah, after attending the workshop, I have full conviction in establishing the lunar month dates by crescent sighting, will be encouraging my family to do the same and will be urging others to attend future workshops inshaAllah. I also have a deep respect for the science
of astronomy, subhanAllah... the miracles of Allah's creations are innumerable. Really looking forward to the time when inshaAllah I'll be able to sight my first crescent!

May Allah swt preserve Imam Afroz and his teachers, elevate and bless them and their families with all that is khair in this world and reward them all with Jannatul firdaus in the next for all their efforts to pass on such sacred knowledge. Ameen

Treating Tripoli

By Imam Afroz Ali

In the Name of Allah, the Benevolent, the Merciful

Reflecting on history teaches you a lot. But to learn authentic history, you need a good teacher; I am most fortunate to have a Teacher like Shaykh Hamza Yusuf. He brought to my attention a long while ago about what is called the Treaty of Tripoli. When the Libyan unrest started and the American politicking kicked off, I was reminded of what my Teacher and later my research taught me about this Treaty between present-day Libya and America.

After the long and bloody war fought on American soil by British colonialists choosing to cut ties with the British Empire of the mid-18th century, America for the first time achieved independence. One of the primary reasons the British, now on American soil, to have revolted was the standard British imperialism of the day, blocking American trade via sea. One of the tools used, as is today by nations, was to create oppressive and undemocratic legislation like the Navigation Acts. The aim was to stop the American settlers from trading with the French, Dutch and the Spanish. When America gained independence, one of the first political strategies played by the master of “divide and rule”, the British Empire made sure that American ships were not only not protected from piracy in the seas, but also created animosity between seafarers and their sponsors during the 1780s.

One such sponsor of trade of the time was the Muslim chiefdoms and caliphates around the Mediterranean- Morocco, Algiers and Libya, then known as the Bey and Subjects of Tripoli of Barbary.

It is a historical fact that whilst the whole of Europe were looking for ways to fight the new America, the first nation to officially recognise and offer diplomatic ties to this new America was none other than a Muslim nation- the kingdom of Morocco, in 1777. The Treaty of Peace and Friendship between the USA and Morocco, negotiated in 1787, is the longest unbroken treaty relationship in US history.

The Pashas and rulers of the Muslim world provided protection to ships from pirates in the larger part of the Mediterranean, and the British were quick enough to create bad blood between the Muslim states of the day and the new United States of America that Britain lost. Piracy, fights and wars ensued in the region. Undoubtedly, there was the driving force of religion from both sides that also played a significant part.

One of the actions that Tripoli offered to the new USA was protection against the pirates and related attacks as long as USA paid Jizyah to Tripoli’s Pasha. Similar such arrangements were made with Algiers and Tunis as well. Despite the fact that no side was innocent in starting or supporting piracy, fights and wars, one thing that did come to the American mariners was safety of passage when they signed a Treat of Peace and Friendship with Tripoli. In signing the Treaty, the then president of USA, John Adams stated:

Now be it known, That I John Adams, President of the United States of America, having seen and considered the said Treaty do, by and with the advice and consent of the Senate, accept, ratify, and confirm the same, and every clause and article thereof. And to the End that the said Treaty may be observed, and performed with good Faith on the part of the United States, I have ordered the premises to be made public; And I do hereby enjoin and require all persons bearing office civil or military within the United States, and all other citizens or inhabitants thereof, faithfully to observe and fulfil the said Treaty and every clause and article thereof.

The treaty in English (putting aside the later controversy regarding the Treat originally in Arabic and the English translation unanimously ratified by the US Senate) reads:

Treaty of Peace and Friendship between the United States of America and the Bey and Subjects of Tripoli of Barbary.
Article 1.
There is a firm and perpetual Peace and friendship between the United States of America and the Bey and subjects of Tripoli of Barbary, made by the free consent of both parties, and guaranteed by the most potent Dey & regency of Algiers.
Article 2.
If any goods belonging to any nation with which either of the parties is at war shall be loaded on board of vessels belonging to the other party they shall pass free, and no attempt shall be made to take or detain them.
Article 3.
If any citizens, subjects or effects belonging to either party shall be found on board a prize vessel taken from an enemy by the other party, such citizens or subjects shall be set at liberty, and the effects restored to the owners.
Article 4.
Proper passports are to be given to all vessels of both parties, by which they are to be known. And, considering the distance between the two countries, eighteen months from the date of this treaty shall be allowed for procuring such passports. During this interval the other papers belonging to such vessels shall be sufficient for their protection.
Article 5.
A citizen or subject of either party having bought a prize vessel condemned by the other party or by any other nation, the certificate of condemnation and bill of sale shall be a sufficient passport for such vessel for one year; this being a reasonable time for her to procure a proper passport.
Article 6.
Vessels of either party putting into the ports of the other and having need of provisions or other supplies, they shall be furnished at the market price. And if any such vessel shall so put in from a disaster at sea and have occasion to repair, she shall be at liberty to land and reembark her cargo without paying any duties. But in no case shall she be compelled to land her cargo.
Article 7.
Should a vessel of either party be cast on the shore of the other, all proper assistance shall be given to her and her people; no pillage shall be allowed; the property shall remain at the disposition of the owners, and the crew protected and succoured till they can be sent to their country.
Article 8.
If a vessel of either party should be attacked by an enemy within gun-shot of the forts of the other she shall be defended as much as possible. If she be in port she shall not be seized or attacked when it is in the power of the other party to protect her. And when she proceeds to sea no enemy shall be allowed to pursue her from the same port within twenty four hours after her departure.
Article 9.
The commerce between the United States and Tripoli, — the protection to be given to merchants, masters of vessels and seamen, — the reciprocal right of establishing consuls in each country, and the privileges, immunities and jurisdictions to be enjoyed by such consuls, are declared to be on the same footing with those of the most favoured nations respectively.
Article 10.
The money and presents demanded by the Bey of Tripoli as a full and satisfactory consideration on his part and on the part of his subjects for this treaty of perpetual peace and friendship are acknowledged to have been received by him previous to his signing the same, according to a receipt which is hereto annexed, except such part as is promised on the part of the United States to be delivered and paid by them on the arrival of their Consul in Tripoli, of which part a note is likewise hereto annexed. And no presence of any periodical tribute or farther payment is ever to be made by either party.
Article 11.
As the government of the United States of America is not in any sense founded on the Christian Religion, — as it has in itself no character of enmity against the laws, religion or tranquility of Musselmen, — and as the said States never have entered into any war or act of hostility against any Mehomitan nation, it is declared by the parties that no pretext arising from religious opinions shall ever produce an interruption of the harmony existing between the two countries.
Article 12.
In case of any dispute arising from a notation of any of the articles of this treaty no appeal shall be made to arms, nor shall war be declared on any pretext whatever. But if the consul residing at the place where the dispute shall happen shall not be able to settle the same, an amicable reference shall be made to the mutual friend of the parties, the Dey of Algiers, the parties hereby engaging to abide by his decision. And he by virtue of his signature to this treaty engages for himself and successors to declare the justice of the case according to the true interpretation of the treaty, and to use all the means in his power to enforce the observance of the same.

One of the most celebrated and prestigious American military section is the Marines, or the United States Marine Corps. Part of their parade dress today includes a sword. It is the oldest weapon still in service by the United States Armed Services. The Marines have their origin from the days of the American Revolution and one such occasion after independence saw them in battle against the pirates from the shores of Tripoli. Their bravery was rewarded by the Caliphate of the time, the Mamluks, with its official sword to a Marine, Lieutenant Presley O’Bannon in 1805. By 1825, all Marines carried the Mamluke sword. Til today, with an 1858 variation, the American Marines parade with the Mamluke sword.

A new dawn came upon Tripoli and Libya as a whole, when USA (followed by NATO forces) dropped bombs as part of its Operation Odyssey Dawn. When America was trying to get on its feet, Tripoli’s intervention was signing a Treaty of Peace and Friendship; today when the people of Tripoli are trying to get back on its own feet again, it finds either death raining on them through American intervention or the tyranny of an American puppet from within them slaughtering them. Perhaps, the Marines may remember the gift of honour that decorate them til today, and once again rise with bravery and treat Tripoli with mutual respect and intervene only for peace and friendship.

From Scepticism to Enchantment

Growing up as a Muslim-Australian in a first generation migrant community can have many advantages and disadvantages. For starters the hyphens are a little difficult to manage. Secondly as young Muslims often the depth of our spiritual/religious connections can be traced back to what we are exposed to as children. So negative experiences at the hands of well meaning, overzealous, Saturday school teachers and preachers can leave long lasting effects.
Unfortunately I am one such example. I began to suspect a pattern developing between the ‘lectures’/ durus I was attending and my growing confusion and my ever increasing feeling of alienation. So as I got older I became sceptical of such gatherings and those that ran them.
Which brings me to my topic. I heard about the Al Ghazzali Centre Seerah classes from a childhood friend. In the past she had made many unsuccessful attempts in interesting me in accompanying her to durus classes. So understandably when she pitched this new Seerah class, my initial reaction was “ummm ...thanks, but no thanks”.
She however, knowing my prejudice promised that “this class was unlike any of the others”. So out of intrigue I agreed to attend “ONE class no strings or commitments attached”.
That first evening I asked my sister to accompany me as a diversion, should the need arise. But as I walked into the venue I was pleasantly surprised. It was an intimate gathering and the mix of people in attendance was slightly unorthodox. I took my seat and as the Imam began the class.
The class was on the Seerah of the last Prophet (pbuh). A topic undoubtedly covered many a times before. But this time it somehow felt different. The Seerah and history were unchanged, but it was the delivery and sincerity that threw me.
I found that I was unprepared for what I was experiencing and hearing.
What was most surprising was that the Imam FELT. He taught the necessary facts and history with enthusiasm and passion. Listening to him speak of the Prophet (pbuh) you could hear, see and feel his compassion, his mahaba. He articulated exactly what I was thinking one evening when he said that the Seerah of the Prophet (pbuh) had been taught many a times, but the focus was often on the number of battles he fought, rather than the love and humility he showed.
The Friday evening classes became a ritual for my sister and I. Ironically I found myself trying to recruit my friends using the same line that was used on me “this class is unlike any of the others” I vouched.
The Al Ghazzali Seerah classes have planted a seed, a seed of receptiveness and willingness that I had lost. My scepticism was replaced with enchantment and mahaba.
I have learnt that mahaba is the first stepping stone of many to receive the light of knowledge.

Our Beloved Teachers - Seekers Retreat 2011

Alhamdulillah for the beautiful souls amongst us such as our beloved teachers
May Allah raise their ranks

"I have never seen Islamic Scholars openly share, talk of and express love as the ones at this Retreat. I initially felt awkward, but soon felt at ease as I actually felt their love for Allah and His Messenger and for all of us, and how they related everything back to the Sunnah. I have come back a changed person."

"The humorous, kind and gentle nature of Faraz Rabbani, the inspiration and love for Allah and the Prophet from Usama Canon and the powerful, thought-provoking presentation and selflessness from Afroz Ali- the best mix of Teachers I have seen in one place."
